Search used to have one answer layer: the list of blue links on Google. Measurement was straightforward — you ranked, or you did not. That world is already gone for a significant share of users. With roughly 34% asking LLMs daily for real answers, a non-trivial portion of brand-related traffic, consideration, and purchase intent now flows through AI systems that summarise the web instead of linking to it. And yet most brands cannot answer a simple question: are we even cited in those summaries?
Why LLM brand visibility matters now
Three things have converged to make brand citations inside LLM answers a real commercial signal rather than a curiosity:
- User volume. A third of the audience is using LLMs as a primary research step. That audience is growing, not shrinking.
- Answer consolidation. When an LLM produces a synthesised answer, only a handful of brands get cited — the rest are invisible regardless of where they rank in Google.
- Trust transfer. Users read a cited brand as the authoritative source on a topic. Non-cited brands do not get consideration at all.
Put together: the LLM answer layer is shaping a new distribution of visibility on top of the existing SEO and paid layers. Brands that do not measure their presence here cannot optimise it.
What the in-house monitoring system does
To make this measurable, we built a system of multiple AI agents that run continuously against the major LLMs. Each agent has a specific job:
- Cross-model checks. Feed the same human-like prompts into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity in parallel. Record how the answers differ, which brands get named, and in what context.
- Reputation and authority audit. Beyond whether a brand is named, examine how it is described — as an authority, as an also-ran, with positive or negative sentiment, against which competitors.
- Visibility share tracking. Record the share of relevant LLM answers in which a brand appears — effectively a share-of-voice metric for the answer layer.
The output is a dashboard that answers the question a classic SEO report cannot: not "where do we rank?" but "when the AI answers, do we get named at all?"
What to do with the signal
LLM visibility is shaped by a different set of inputs than SEO ranking. In our early work with this monitoring system, three patterns are showing up repeatedly:
- Structured, definitional content wins. LLMs quote sources that describe concepts clearly with unambiguous definitions. Branded positioning language that is marketing-heavy gets ignored.
- Authority signals transfer. Backlinks, citations in reputable publications, and mentions in authoritative datasets that were already useful for SEO are also inputs the LLM training data absorbed. The work is not wasted; it is recontextualised.
- Competitor absence is an opportunity. If the AI can cite you where it cannot cite a competitor on a category-defining query, that is a moment of disproportionate leverage. Measure them. Compound them.
The shift from "SEO reporting" to "answer-layer reporting" is not a replacement. It is an additional dashboard view that, for the first time, makes the new channel actionable.
